Constance is the biggest city at the Lake Constance directly at the border to switzerland and is very picturesque. This city is a place where you can relax, go shopping, or visit the numerous attractions. The city has 80,000 inhabitants and has a very relaxed atmosphere with small narrow streets with local shops. Large store chains are here the minority.
Arrival and Around
For getting to Constance you can use the new remote buses (like mein Fernbus). They offer connections from a lot of other german cities for reasonable prices. You also can take the train. But in general this is more expansive that taking the bus. Another popular opportunity is to search for car pooling. Here private drivers offer a seat in their car and you have to pay for the distance traveled. Sometimes this is a nice opportunity to get to know people; sometimes you will pray that the weird guy next to you just shuts up!
Constance doesn’t have too many opportunities for backpackers and it also isn’t really cheap. One location that is very clean, new and nice is the aqua hotel + hostel. Here the people are very friendly and helpful. It is a combination between a hostel and a hotel; so you can sleep in a dorm or book a single or double room. The rooms have a own bathroom and toilet, bed linen, towels, TV, telephone, hairdryer and shower gel and soap. It is not VERY cheap but very reasonable for what you get.
Single room starting from 49 € per night up to 110 € in high season.
Double room starting from 59 € per night up to 120 € in high season.
one bed in a 6-bed dorm: starting at 25 €
one bed in a 8-bed dorm: starting at 21 €
…also those prices can go up to 35 € in high season.
The aqua hotel + hostel also has a nice restaurant and the prices are fair.
Pano (Marktstätte 6) offers bread & coffee and much more. They produce wood oven bread, quality spreads without preservatives and additives, traditionally made coffee, tea, ice cream and chocolates, cakes based on homemade recipes and hand-made products. So, they offer very delicious snacks for a coffee break, but one has to say that is also expansive.
Also a recommendable restaurant is the Roter Gugelhan (Salmannsweilergasse 12). This is a traditional restaurant that offers pizza, very delicious “Flammkuchen”, Schnitzel and several other foods.
As mentioned before Constance offers a lot opportunities to spend the day with. You definately should’t miss to visit the famous port of Constance. There you can find the Imperia, a statue of a prostitute that reminds of the less glorious side of the Council of Constance from 1414-1418.
A nice day-trip to the isle of Mainau also is recommendable; the flower island in the Lake Constance. The island is 1100 m long and 610 m wide and has a picturesque landscape a nature. There you can see a lot of different flowers and trees and they also have a butterfly house. Entrance fee is 18 € for adults.
